Abstract
A process for the repeated production of oxycellulose comprises oxidizing cellulose at pH 7-11, preferably pH 8-10, with an aqueous solution of a bromide and a hypochlorite (yielding hypobromite), preferably the sodium salts, and then regenerating the used solution in two steps for further use, by first reducing the bromate formed and then oxidizing the resultant solution, this oxidized solution being then used for the oxidation of more cellulose. The bromate in the used solution may suitably be reduced to bromine in the presence of the contained bromide, by a mineral acid such as sulphuric acid or by sulphur dioxide. Caustic alkali may then be added and the solution oxidized with chlorine gas to the desired constitution. The cations present in the solution should be all of the same species, preferably sodium. The oxycellulose obtained is said to be suitable for use as chromatography paper.
