Abstract

Organic disulphides are obtained by subjecting organic compounds which contain sulphhydryl groups to the action of chloric acid or its salts, with or without a compound having the property of reducing chloric acid to a lower stage of oxidation, and with or without osmium tetroxide as catalyst. Aqueous or organic solvents may be employed. According to examples, ethylmercaptan, benzylmercaptan, p-thiocresol, and thiosalicylic acid, are converted into the corresponding disulphides with the use of hydrochloric acid and sodium chlorate in aqueous or benzene solution; thiosalicylic acid is treated with sodium chlorate and sodium nitrite in alkaline solution, to give dithiosalicylic acid; and mercaptobenzothiazole is treated with sodium chlorate in presence of osmium tetroxide to give dibenzothiazyldisulphide, which may also be obtained by oxidation of mercaptobenzothiazole with mixed nitric acid, sulphuric acid and sodium chlorate, with hydrochloric acid and sodium chlorate, with hydrochloric acid, sodium chlorate and sodium nitrite, with sodium chlorate and oxalic acid, and with hydrochloric acid, sodium chlorate and sodium bisulphite.
