Abstract
791,051. Generating combustion products under pressure. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. July 29, 1955 [July 30, 1954], No. 22276/54. Class 51 (1). A combustion chamber suitable for a gasturbine or jet-propulsion plant comprises a flame tube or flame chamber disposed within an outer casing 6 and defining therewith a passage 10 for the flow of coolant over the flame tube or chamber, the flame tube or chamber comprising an outer wall 1 and an inner shield 2 supported from the outer wall to protect the latter from the radiant heat of the combustion products and to enclose therebetween a substantially stagnant zone 3 which communicates with the combustion space through one or more openings. The space 3 between the outer wall of the flame tube and the shield is closed at the upstream end by a flange 4; resilient spacers 5 are disposed between the outer wall and the shield at the downstream end. The flame tube is supported within the outer casing 6 by means of flanges 7 and 8. Apertures 9 are provided in the outer casing 6 and serve as inlets for coolant fluid to the space 10. The shield may alternatively or additionally comprise a cylindrical sleeve divided circumferentially and longitudinally into a number of arcuate plates 11 as shown at the downstream end of the flame tube in Fig. 1. Each plate is separately supported by the outer wall 1 by means of studs or bolts 13, 14, the stud 13 affording a rigid connection and the stud 14 being slidable in an elongated hole in the outer wall 1. Gaps 12 are provided between adjacent plates. The invention is shown applied in the case of a vortex or cyclone type of flame chamber in Fig. 5, the flame chamber having an outer wall 1 and an inner shield comprising a plurality of wall elements 11 similar to those of the first embodiment, each element being supported from the outer wall 1 by a single stud 13.
