588,572. Generating combustion products under pressure. DARLINGTON, W. H., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 28, 1944, No. 23754. [Class 51 (i)] A combustion chamber, Figs. 1 and 2, for a gas turbine comprises a number of flame tubes 1, for the primary combustion of the fuel injected in the upstream direction, connected to a common annular portion 2, defining a zone for the secondary combustion of the combustion products from the flame tubes 1 with additional air, the flame tubes and annular portion being contained between inner and outer casings 45, and forming therewith passages for the air to the secondary combustion zone. The secondary air passes through the passages 12, 13 to ducts 14 leading to the secondary combustion zone. These ducts may be supplemented by one or more series of holes 14a to supply air along the length of a chamber. The flame tubes 1 may be provided with a closing plate 8 having an imperforate portion surrounded by circular rows of holes 8a for admission of primary air and are in open communication with the secondary combustion zone through holes in the spectacle plate 3 by means of which they are attached to the annular portion 2. Holes 15 in the spectacle plate may be provided for additional secondary air and may be arranged as shown or circularly disposed about the axis of the flame tube. The ends of the annular portion 2 may merge distinctly into the inlet annulus of the turbine 7 and the casing walls 4, 5 into the compressor 6 outlet annulus. In a modification, the spectacle plate 3 is connected to the inner and outer surfaces of the annular portion 2 by a conical member in which the chutes 14 are placed. In another modification, this conical member is provided with corrugations which lie between the flame tubes and gradually merge into the cylinder surface of the annular portion. The chutes 14 may be replaced by rows of holes circularly disposed about the axis of the annular portion. In still another modification, the spectacle plate is dispersed with and the flame tubes 1 are joined to a conical member which merges directly into the inner and outer surfaces of the annular portion. The flame tubes are separably and releasably attached to the annular portion so that they may be easily changed or made of a material having higher heat resisting qualities than that of the remaining parts of the combustion chamber. The outer conical surface of the flame tubes may also be perforated to provide additional primary air to the tube. Specification 587,083 is referred to.
