Abstract

789,249. Emptying tanks. GUINARD, P. A. Sept. 22, 1955 [Sept. 27, 1954], No. 27093/55. Class 21. [Also in. Group XXIX] A suction pipe 1 for emptying tanks has a closing member 9 that falls under gravity as soon as air is sucked up the pipe, the closing member 9 being adapted to lock automatically with a complementary part 2 of the pipe in its closed position until it is forcibly unseated by impact on the bottom of the container ; there being two rings of elastically deformable material, of which the first is a sealing ring 14 resisting downward movement of the closing member 9 when fully seated, while the second is a locking ring 15 that cooperates with an annular swelling on the closing member 9 or complimentary pipe part 2 by engaging or being engaged by the annular swelling from below to resist upward movement of the closing member when fully seated. As shown the locking ring 15 is in a groove in the closing member 9 and the complementary pipe part 2 has the annular swelling 13. The left hand side of Fig. 2 shows the closing member 9 in its unseated position and ready to rise with any liquid drawn up through the pipe 1. As shown on the right hand side of Fig. 2 the closing member 9 has fallen such that the locking ring 15 has been forced downwardly past the annular swelling 13 and the upper ring 14 is firmly seated. The closing member 9 can be displaced by forcing the tube 1 into a tank until the spring 21 is compressed sufficiently to allow an extension 20 of the closing member 9 to strike the tank bottom. The locking ring 15 may be associated with another elastic ring 16, the rings 15 and 16 being accommodated in a groove that decreases in depth from above downwards.
