Abstract
809,828. Gauge glasses. SEETRU Ltd. Sept. 6, 1956 [Aug. 31, 1955], No. 25009/55. Class 123(1) In a gauge glass for indicating the level of liquid in a storage tank wherein one or each end of the glass is mounted in an upright socket extending radially from a narrow collar which engages over a nipple secured into the tank, for example, as described. in Specification 670,041, the nipple incorporates a valve by means of which the communication from the tank to the glass can be closed off to allow the glass to be removed for cleaning &c. The nipple 7 is screwed into a boss 9 mounted in the tank wall 6 and has an external collar 10 against which the collar 5 of the gauge glass 1 is held by a retaining nut 16, the nipple having an internal bore 12 from which apertures 13 communicate with the interior of the glass. Within the bore 12 is mounted a valve plunger 20 having a seating ring 21 which, in the closed position of the plunger, position A, engages a seating 22 formed within the bore to shut off the interior of the tank from the glass. In the open position, position B, of the valve the interior of the tank is in free communication with the glass. A sealing ring 23 prevents leakage of liquid through the nipple. When the gauge is used on a pressurized tank combined nipple and valve devices are fitted at both ends of the glass.
