Abstract

787,391. Electromagnetic relays. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. Oct. 10, 1955 [Oct. 6, 1954], No. 28841/54. Class 38 (5). A relay comprises a winding 11 on an aluminium former 6 mounted on a rod 7, the winding being positioned in an annular air gap 4 formed between an annular permanent magnet 1 and a magnetic plate 3 whereby on energization of the winding the winding assembly moves upwards and the upper end of the rod closes a pair of contacts 18, 19. A magnetic case 2 connects the parts 1, 3. The rod 7 is slidable in bearings 8 within the magnet 1 and the lower end normally abuts a set screw 10 adjustable to vary the relay operating current. The rod 7 carries a magnetic cross-bar 14 having its ends adjacent adjustable polepieces 15 mounted on the plate 3 whereby leakage flux produces a restraint on the initial movement of the rod until the bar moves out of alignment with the polepieces and the contacts 18, 19 then close with a snap action. A transparent cover 21 encloses the contacts. The relay is relatively insensitive to vibration owing to the clamping effect produced by eddy currents generated in the conducting former 6.
