Abstract
787,040. Pistons. CHICAGO RAILWAY EQUIPMENT CO. July 4, 1955, No. 19311/55. Class 122 (1). [Also in Group XXII] A trunk piston for internal combustion, particularly Diesel, engines, is made of metal of relatively high thermal conductivity, such as aluminium, and has in its head 1 an-insert 3, 4 of relatively low thermal conductivity metal, preferably ferrous metal such as cast iron, that extends from the top face to the underside of the head and is in permanent surface contact with the remainder of the head. The insert may be formed with radial arms 5 integral with an annulus 6 adapted to carry piston rings 7. At least part of the interface between the metals is corrugated and the aluminium is cast around the ferrous metal in a manner such that a molecular bond exists between the metals. This bond may be achieved by immersing the insert in molten aluminium or aluminium base alloy until a thin layer of an alloy of the two metals is formed on the insert which alloy readily unites with the aluminium of the head when it is subsequently cast around the insert. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 741,173.
