Abstract

The caking of granular phosphorus containing fertilizer materials is prevented by spraying the granules with a dilute aqueous solution of an alkali metal lauryl sulphate, preferably sodium lauryl sulphate in an amount corresponding to 1 to 3 lbs. per ton. The spraying, which may be effected with a 3 to 10 per cent lauryl sulphate solution, may be effected before or after cooling the granulated fertilizer, for example while the fertilizer is carried on a conveyer belt or while it is falling as a stream. According to an example a granular fertilizer containing superphosphate, ammonium sulphate and potassium chloride at a temperature of 50 DEG to 60 DEG C. was sprayed with a 7,5 per cent aqueous solution of sodium lauryl sulphate at the same temperature, in an amount corresponding to 0,15 per cent sodium lauryl sulphate based on the fertilizer weight. The resulting granular product when cooled had a moisture content of 2 per cent and did not cake on storing.
