Abstract
643,026. Cutting-machines. LAMSON PARAGON SUPPLY CO., Ltd., and GARWOOD, V. W. May 5, 1947, No. 12092. [Class 31 (i)] In a guillotine cutting- machine a paper web is fed to a guillotine cutter by a pin feeding mechanism comprising cutter operating mechanism synchronized with the feeding mechanism so that the web is stationary and the web is positively held when the cuts are made, the cutter and web holding means forming a unit which is mounted for movement towards or away from the feeding mechanism to vary the position at which the web is cut. As shown, the web is fed between guides 10a, 10b, Fig. 3, and if desired spring-finger guides, by pins 19 on the feeding mechanism 20, Fig. 2, engaging marginal perforations on a margin of the web. The web can be provided with perforations on two opposite margins each engaged by a feeding mechanism. The web is held in its cutting position by spring- urged plungers 71, Fig. 1, and cut between a fixed blade 35 and a movable blade 43, which is pivoted in a slot 44 by a pin 45. The cut portions of the web are then fed away on an endless conveyer comprising endless belts 83 and collected in an adjustable tray (not shown). An electric motor A drives a worm and wormwheel C through a shaft B and clutch E. The worm-wheel carries cranks G, H, Fig. 1, the crank G driving the feeding means and crank H the cutter. The crank G is connected to a rocker arm 23 on a shaft 21. The arm 23 carries a spring-urged pawl 24 engaging a ratchet-wheel 25 having four or more teeth and rigid with the shaft. The shaft 21 also carries a detent wheel 32 having notches corresponding to the dwell periods of the feeding mechanism engageable by a roller 34 and a spring-loaded arm 33 and a gear-wheel 26. The gear-wheel 26 drives a spindle 29 of the feeding mechanism through gearing 27, 28, Fig. 2. A brake drum 89 may be fitted on the spindle 29 under the adjustable pressure of a laminated spring 90 mounted on a bracket 91. The feeding mechanism is also carried on a shaft 31 and can be adjusted transversely for different widths of web. The cutter is driven by a shaft 55, Fig. 1, from the crank H in a similar manner as the feeding mechanism through a shaft 64 which is bevel-geared to a shaft 66 having a crank 68 pivoted to a link 69 connected to a cutteroperating frame 53 which is pivoted to a bracket 54 on the machine bed 8. The frame 53 has a cross-bar 52 engaging a slot 51 in a lug 46 depending from the movable cutter 43. The lug 46 has a slot 47 in which rides a roller 49 on a guide 48 secured to a frame 36. As the frame 53 is oscillated from the crank H, the movable blade 43 is oscillated and has by means of the slot 44 a combined slicing and scissors cut working against the fixed cutter 35 mounted on the frame 36. The drive to either the feeding mechanism or cutter can be disconnected as shown in Fig. 4 applied to the feeding mechanism. The pawl 24 carries a pin 92 which, when normally engaged by an arm 93, holds the pawl 24 out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel 25, thus disconnecting the drive to the feeding mechanism. The pawl 24 is allowed to engage the ratchet-wheel by depression of a rod 99 pulling the arm 93 into the position shown in full lines by a two-armed lever 97 and a rod 96 pivoted to the arm 93. The rod 99 may be held permanently depressed by rotation so that a projection 101 passes beneath a depending lug 102. The web is held adjacent to the cutter by means of a transverse bar 70 mounted on the frame 36 and having a number of holes therein in each of which is mounted a spring-urged pin 72. Mounted on the bar 70 by means of links 74 and a tension spring 74a is a swinging bar 73 which is fitted with yieldable spring-pressed plungers 75 having heads 76 making contact with the head of each pin 72 and pressing the pin 72 into contact with the web. Movement of the bar 73 and the pins 72 is synchronized with the cutting operation by a depending leg 77 resting on the cross-bar 52. The frame 36 has two tubular screw-threaded lugs 37, Fig. 2, which are mounted on two parallel screw-threaded spindles 39, 40 which are each bevel-geared to a transverse shaft 42 having a handle (not shown). Rotation of the shaft 42 by the handle causes the distance between the feeding mechanism and the cutter to be varied enabling the position at which the cut is made to be varied. Secured to the cutter is the conveyer comprising the endless belts 83 mounted over a roller 79 and pulleys 81a on a shaft 81. The shaft 81 is driven by bevel-gearing and shaft 84 ... 88 from the spindle 29 but adapted to operate at a lower speed than the feed of the web so that the cut webs overlap as they fall and can thus be easily retained in the desired order. Specification 566,522 is referred to.
