Abstract

1,151,158. Typewriters. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 11 Aug., 1967 [15 Sept., 1966], No. 36883/67. Heading B6F. In a typebar typewriting machine wherein each typebar carries an upper case character and a lower ease character, means are provided to adjust the striking force of each typebar individually, and also to adjust simultaneously the striking forces of all the typebars, the simultaneous adjusting means comprising one striking- force controlling means operative when lower case printing is being carried out and another controlling means when upper-case printing is being effected. As shown, each type bar 11 with upper and lower case characters 13, 15 thereon, is pivoted at 17, and is connected by a link 21 to a lever 23 pivoted at 24 and carrying a pivoted cam member 25 having a toothed edge 27. Operation of a key causes the keylever to contact a lug 31 on a trip lever 33 pivoted on the lever 23, so that the lever 33 moves the cam 25 into engagement with a continuously-rotating resiliently-covered roller 29. Such engagement causes the typebar 11 to be rotated to effect printing and continues until a part 28 on the cam 25 strikes a knock-off finger 39, there being one finger 39 for each cam 25. The fingers 39 are mounted on a bar 35 and can be individually adjusted by screws 37 so as to vary the distances travelled by the cams 25 before they are disengaged from the roller 29, and thus to adjust the striking forces of the type bars 11. The bar 35 is pivoted at 41 and, when the machine is operating in lower case, rests on a cam 45 which can be rotated to adjust the bar position and therefore to adjust collectively the striking forces of the typebars. A second cam 43 is fixed to the spindle of cam 45, and the bar 35 carries a lever 47 which is aligned with the cam 43. When the machine is set for upper case printing, a link 51 is operated to rotate the lever 47 into a position where a part 53 thereof engages the cam 43 and raises the plate 35 from the cam 45 so that the plate is supported by the lever 47 resting on the cam 43. Rotation of the cam 43 now causes collective adjustment of the striking forces of the upper case characters. Since only a portion of the cams 43, 45 is employed for a range of settings, the cams may be rotated to bring other portions into use according to the media upon which typing is to be effected.
