Voltage control.-The voltage of a single-phase alternator 17 is controlled by energizing the field 1 of a D.C. exciter 2 from the output of the alternator via a variable transformer 13 and a rectifier 7. The transformer 13 has a core section 18 movable by a solenoid 23 in accordance with the output voltage of the alternator. Transformers.-A variable voltage transformer has a primary 14 and secondary 12 wound on a core with a movable section 18 which is supported on springs, Fig. 2 (not shown) and coupled to the armature 19 of an electromagnet 23. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown) the electromagnet is pot-shaped and the armature enters the solenoid. In another modification, Fig. 4, the solenoid armature 19 and the transformer core 18 are on opposite sides of a pivot 32 and held by centring springs 34. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the secondary is wound on the movable part of the core.
