Abstract

862,435. Change-speed gear. SCHLEPPERWERK NORDHAUSEN VEB. March 2, 1959 [Dec. 22, 1958], No. 7150/59. Class 80 (2). A change-speed gear for motor vehicles providing four forward reduced, direct drive and four reverse ratios comprises aligned input and output shafts 1, 2 which carry slidably thereon a driving pinion 4 and driven pinions 8 ... 11, which former is moved to mesh a pinion 5 fast on a countershaft 3 for forward drive; or an idler 6 in constant mesh with a pinion 51 fast with the countershaft 3 and substantially equal to the pinion 5, for reverse drive; or is moved to bridge the shafts 1, 2 to act as a clutch sleeve for direct drive. With the driving pinion 4 in the forward or reverse position the pinions 8 ... 11 are selectively meshed with pinions 12 ... 15 fast with the countershaft 3 to select the gear ratio. The ratios are selected by two gear shift levers 16, 17, the latter of which has an arm 25 spring pressed into engagement with a shift fork 18 for the driving pinion 4 and which when turned moves the pinion 4 into the reverse or forward position in which latter the arm 25 abuts a stop (Fig. 3, not shown) preventing further movement into direct drive. An arm 24 of the shift lever 16 is selectively engaged with shift forks 20. 22 and is turned to move the gear-wheels 8 ... 11. For direct drive with the shift fork 18 in the forward position and the others 20, 22 in their neutral positions, the grooves in shift forks are aligned and the arm 24 may be moved to engage the shift fork 18 during which movement the arm 25 is moved out of the shift fork by an abutment 28 on the arm 24, an abutment 26 on the arm 25 sliding into a slat 29 to prevent turning of the lever 17. The shift fork 18 is then turned to the direct drive position during which an extension of the abutment 28 retains the arm 25 in the disengaged position.
