Abstract
783,222. One - way clutches. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. Sept. 1, 1955 [Nov. 1, 1954], No. 25124/55. Class 80 (2). In a one-way clutch with tiltable sprags 5 biased towards wedging engagement with inner and outer races 2, 4 by a garter spring 12 passing through holes in the sprags, each sprag has outer and inner projections 13, 14 on each side which are at all times in contact with the corresponding projections on the adjacent sprags so as to force all the sprags to tilt uniformly and simultaneously. The projections may be of angular configuration, as shown in Fig. 4, or may be rounded. The sprags have end surfaces 6, 7 curved about spaced centres, though some of them may be curved about a common centre so as to act as bearing rollers. One of the sprags may, to facilitate assembly, be formed in two stepped parts, as shown in Fig. 10, with interposed blade springs 34.
