Abstract
713,308. One-way clutches. BORG-WARiNER CORPORATION; Dec. 12, 1952 [Dec. 24, 1951], No. 31527/52. Class 80 (2) In a one-way clutch with tiltable sprags 17 having eccentric wedging surfaces 18, 19 engaged between concentric races 15, 16 , a cage for the sprags comprises a resilient sheet-metal ring 21 having openings 23 for the sprags which latter are tiltable about the leading edge 31 of the openings, the leading face of each sprag having a notch 29 receiving the edge 31, while tabs 25 integral with the intervening cross pieces 24 bias the sprags into wedging position, the tabs 25 or the side parts of the rinig or both (as shown) having corrugations 28; 27 which permit peripheral displacement of any of the sprags relative to the others. The trailing side of each sprag may be flat or, as shown, have a notch 30 in which the tab 25 engages. A relatively rigid ring 20, with over-size openings 22 for the sprags, may surround the ring 21. The corrugations 27 may be in line with the corrugations 28, as shown, or may be near the middle of the openings 23, or may be opposite the cross pieces 24 which, in that case, have openings therein.
