783,175. Lathe-details; cutting-tools. LASALLE STEEL CO. Aug. 6, 1953 [Aug. 19, 1952], No. 21726/53. Class 83 (3). Cutting-apparatus for lathes comprises a frustoconicaltool 20 mounted on spherical bearing 28 in a holder 22 for rotation about its axis, the tool having a cutting-edge 26 about the periphery of its base. The holder is positioned with respect to the work so that the diameter of the base which passes through the point of contact of the cutting-edge with the work is normal to a plane including the work-axis, and the plane of the cutting edge is at a side-rake angle α within the range minus 45 to minus 70 degrees. The tool is rotated by the work. In a modification, the tool is rotated by an hydraulic or other motor. Hollow cutter-heads. In an arrangement for turning stationary work, one or more tools and holders are mounted radially in a cage rotatable about the work. Specification 607,770 is referred to.
