Abstract

782,415. Cigarette-making machines. MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. April 12, 1955 [April 13, 1954], No. 10843/54. Class 130. A web 1 of material which is cut into uniting bands 100, Fig. 1, for uniting cigarettes and stubs to form mouthpiece cigarettes is coated with adhesive which is partially dried by a heater 9 before the bands are applied to the aligned cigarettes 8 and stubs 7. The web 1 is coated with adhesive by a roller 3 and then passes on to a suction drum 2 beneath which is positioned an electric heater 9 which partially dries the adhesive. The web is cut into separate bands 100 by a pair of spring-loaded knives 24 carried by a rotating carrier 23 and actuated in succession by a hammer 30, the speed of the carrier 23 being such that the knives travel at the speed of the drum 2 during cutting. The web 1 travels at a lower speed than the drum 2 and slips relatively thereto whereby the bands 100 after being cut from the web are accelerated by the drum 2 and spaced apart, the bands being finally a composite rod R of double-length cigarettes 8 and stubs 7 to unite the cigarettes and stubs. In a modification the bands 100 are applied to assemblages consisting of a double length stub positioned between two cigarettes, as described, e.g. in Specification 457,033. In Fig. 2 the drying of the adhesive is effected by blowing air through a heating chamber 12, heated by electric elements 13, against the web. Specification 781,907 also is referred to.
