In a piston ring comprising alternate superposed layers of steel 1 and synthetic resin 2, 3 capable of withstanding the temperatures experienced in internal combustion engines, for example, polytetrafluoroethylene, adjacent layers are arranged to break joint so that the ends engage in tongue-and-groove fashion. In a modification, the ring consists of a layer of synthetic resin interposed between two steel layers.
