An apparatus for applying open-ended spring retaining rings to shafts &c. comprises means for holding a ring while permitting limited spreading thereof, ring spreading means actuable into the gap between the open ends of the ring, means for retraction thereof from the gap and means providing for the insertion of a shaft through the spread ring. A bed plate 13 is mounted on a bench by brackets 11, 12. Plates 14, 15 fixed to the top face of the plate 13 form a slideway 16 for a slide 17 which projects forward beyond the plates 14,15 and provides the spreading means for the ring 40 which rests in a pocket 25 provided in an upper front plate 24 secured to a lower front plate 20 fixed to the bed 13. Slots communicating with the slide are provided in plates 20, 24. The recess 25 in the plate 24 is larger than the communicating opening 22 in the plate 20 the edge zone of the opening 22 forming the base of the pocket 25. The recess 25 is shaped complementally to the outer edge of the ring in spread condition. The forward end of the slide has inclined slots 17a, 17b, Fig. 4, which provide a V-shaped point 19, the level of the slots corresponding to that of the top plate 24 to allow the point to enter the gap between the ends of the ring. The opening 22 in the bottom wall 20 of the pocket 25 together with a correspondingly shaped opening in the bed plate 13 constitute the means providing for the insertion of the shaft into the spread ring. The slide is reciprocated by a pivoted bell crank lever 30 connected through a chain 35 to a foot pedal (not shown). Depression of the foot-pedal moves the slide forwards, a spring 36 urging the lever counter-clockwise causes retraction of the slide. Specification 685,982 [Group XXV] is referred to.
