520,854. Packing cigarettes into boxes. ROSE, A. G., and ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. Nov. 2, 1938, No. 31674. [Class 94 (i)] Apparatus for packing cigarettes into rectangular boxes comprises means for feeding a batch of cigarettes from a hopper on to a movable platform, means for moving the platform into an inclined position, and means for transferring the cigarettes from the inclined platform into a box. The cigarettes 1 are stored in a hopper 2 and they gravitate between vanes to form an even row at the base of the hopper. This row is discharged by a reciprocating member 8, Fig. 1, into the space between a platform 29 and a guide plate 32, and comes to rest against a stop plate 61 carried by a pivoted arm 59. Next, the platform 29 moves downwards and is inclined towards a box 81 supported on a pocket 79 on a conveyer chain, so that the row of cigarettes point at the box. During this movement, levers 51 carried by the platform press the cigarettes together so that they occupy a length slightly less than the internal length of the box. The stop plate 61 is also swung away from the cigarettes. As soon as the movement of the platform stops, a plunger 66 presses the row of cigarettes into the box and a positioning member 83 presses them into place. In a modification, the stop plate 61 is replaced by a brush which presses lightly on the row of cigarettes.
