Abstract

781,163. Hydraulic shock absorbers. GLOUCESTER RAILWAY CARRIAGE & WAGON CO., Ltd. Nov. 17, 1953 [Nov. 19, 1952], No. 29182/52. Class 108(3) A hydraulic shock absorber comprises upper and lower tubes 21, 23 associated respectively with closure members 10, 11 the inner tube being formed at or toward its free end with an orificed piston head 24 thus forming two chambers 35, 36 both filled with hydraulic fluid, a recuperation chamber 12a being formed by a wall forming element 12 extending upwardly from the lower closure member 11 which has an opening 34 into the chamber 12a. Liquid in the chamber 12a (which is open to atmosphere)' covers the joint between the tubes 21, 23. A filling valve is provided at 38. 'The piston 24 has a passage 28 affording restricted flow in either direction, and has ports 29 controlled by a one-way valve 30. A dust cover 39 is rigid with the head 10. In operation, on compression, liquid is compressed in chamber 35 and escapes through the orifice 28. On extension, the damping is reduced since liquid can flow back into the chamber 35 through the valve 30.
