Abstract

780,870. Valves. FIORENTINI, P. Jan. 13, 1955 [March 6, 1954], No. 1111/55. Class 135. A butterfly valve comprises a valve body having a bore formed with a part-spherical seating surface, a movable valve member having a complementary-shaped peripheral surface and at least one internally re-inforced sealing ring between the surfaces. A valve body 1, Fig. 1, fixed to a pipe coupling 40 is formed with a hard chrome part-spherical seating 41 engageable with sealing rings 9 having steel wire cores 25 and secured in grooves 11a in a valve member 11 by plates 15. The valve member is keyed to a shaft 12, Fig. 2, rotatable by a lever 5 slidable on the shaft. The shaft is mounted in taper-ended, roller-bearinged bushes 2 sealed against leakage by rings 8, 10 and wedged into tapered holes in the valve member. A locking pin 24 and pins engageable in holes in the lever boss and one of the bushes enables the valve to be locked in any desired position. The valve member varies in thickness from a maximum at its pivotal axis to a minimum at the places remotest therefrom so that the grooves 11 a are wider apart at the pivot axis to allow the sealing rings to pass below and above the shaft 12 and the bushes 2. In a modification, the valve member is made in two parts connected together along a plane obliquely disposed with respect to the shaft axis. A single re-inforced sealing ring is then fitted in a groove in this oblique plane. Instead of the locking-pin 24, the boss of the lever may be coned and wedged into a conical bush by a hand wheel screwed on to the shaft 12. The lever may be-replaced by a worm and wormwheel operable by a hand wheel.
