Abstract
780,464. Centrifugal fans. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Dec. 21, 1955 [Jan. 3, 1957], No. 36632/55. Class 110 (1). A centrifugal fan comprises hollow airfoil impeller blades supported between plates and having openings or slots in their outer sides adjacent their trailing edges, and means for supplying air under pressure into the blades to be blown through the openings. When it is desired to increase the discharge pressure of the fan, a valve 20, Fig. 4, is opened to the required degree to admit compressed air from a source 22 through a seal 19 to the bore 17 of the hollow shaft 18, and thence through radially-extending bores 16 and axially-extending bores 15 in the centre plate 11 to the hollow interiors of blades 14. The compressed air is expelled through slots 26 in the outer sides of the blades adjacent the trailing edges, and deflects the gas passing the outer sides outwardly, producing an effect as if the trailing edges were thickened and their angles of attack increased. The slots 26 may be replaced by pivoted flaps 27, Fig. 5, which are normally kept closed by the centrifugal effect of counterweights 29, but are opened to the dotted position by the compressed air.
