Abstract

615,219. Air compressors. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd., and DAVIDSON, 1. M. Dec. 13, 1945, No. 33836. Drawings to Specification. [Class 110 (i)] In an axial or radial flow bladed compressor the gas enters the rotor with supersonic velocity relative to the rotor blades causing a compression shock system which rotates with the rotor. The leading edge of each blade has its trailing surface substantially in the line of the relative velocity and its leading surface at an angle sufficient to set up a shock system, but not so great as to cause the shock waves to form up-stream in the stator passages. Preferably, the gas velocity relative to the stator blades and that relative to the rotor blades at outlet are sub-sonic. The blades may have a bi-convex profile. A stage according to the invention may be compounded with ordinary stages, and, with oppositely-running rotors. There may be more than one stage according to the invention. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 622,049.
