A metal piston, for example the displacer piston of a refrigerator or a hot-gas engine, is coated on its working surface with a layer comprising a porous organic material and having a thickness of not more than 2, and preferably 0.5, millimetres. The coating may be of wood, which may be applied by gluing and be impregnated with a lubricant, or a fibre mass impregnated with a heat-resistant synthetic resin, or metal compounds impregnated with a heat-resistant synthetic resin.
