816,616. Combustion chambers. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG A.G. July 31, 1956 [Sept. 13, 1955], No. 23569/56. Class 7(3) In a combustion chamber provided with a lining 12 which when cold maintains an air gap 14 between itself and the combustion chamber wall but closes the gap when hot, the surface 12a of the lining,. or the surface 7 of the chamber wall, is treated, e.g. by a sulphatizing or phosphatizing process, to prevent metallic fusion of the liner and chamber wall when they come into contact. The lining 12 which is secured in position by a retaining ring 13, may be secured in a separate member 4a secured in the piston. The fuel is sprayed immediately on to the lining 12 to form a thin film thereon which is vaporized by air rotating in the chamber. In a modification, Fig. 3, the inner surface of the lining is coated with a porous material 23 which facilitates evaporation of the film of fuel.
