Abstract

779,384. Loose leaf binders. SOENNECKEN, A. May 31, 1955 [May 29, 1954], No. 15660/55. Class 146(1). A loose leaf lever arch file binder operated by a single arm lever has a pawl and ratchet system having a cam disc with equidistant cams acting on the cranked spring pressed pivoting member so that at each downward movement of the lever arm, the cam disc is advanced one-half of the cam interval and the pivoting member moves through a distance equal to the vertical deviation of the lowermost cam to tilt the arches. The file comprises arches 4, for engagement with posts 2 (not shown), pivoting in lugs 3 on the base 1 and joined by a cranked part 6 with a shoulder 7 centrally notched at 8, the part 6 being pressed upwardly by springs 9. A combined ratchet wheel and cam disc 13 is pivoted at 12 to an upright support 11, the wheel having six teeth 14 and three cam pins 15 each with a roller 16 freely mounted thereon to engage and move with the cranked part 6. A lever arm 18 with finger key 19 is mounted on the support 11 by a pin 17 and is pressed upwardly by a spring 10, a slot 24 engaging over the pin 12 to limit movement. A pawl 21 is pivotally mounted at 20 on the lever arm 18 and is pressed by a spring 23 so that its tooth 22 engages the teeth 14. In the closed position shown in Fig. 1, the lowermost cam pin 15 engages in the notch 8 to hold the arches 4 closed. Downward pressure on lever arm 18 moves the cam disc to the position shown in Fig. 3 and the arches 4 are tilted, the shoulder 7 being engaged either side by the two cam pins 15 to limit the movement. Downward pressure on lever arm 18 then moves the next pin 15 to engage the notch 8, the arm 18 being returned at each operation by the spring 10. In a modification of the pawl, the spring 23 is dispersed with and the pawl engages the teeth by its own weight, an opposed lever arm and safety tooth being provided.
