Abstract
779,358. Abrasive sheets. BAY STATE ABRASIVE PRODUCTS CO. June 30, 1954 [July 2, 1953], No. 19218/54. Class 60 [Also in Group VIII] An abrasive sheet comprises a base of open mesh fabric 11 woven from continuous filament yarns 12, 13 which are impregnated and/or coated with a flexible material, and a coating 19 of abrasive granules deposited over the entire exposed surfaces of the yarns and held thereon by a hardened adhesive. The fabric may be a plain, twill gauze or leno weave of rayon, nylon or glass single or mutlifilament yarns, and may have double warp yarns. The yarns may be impregnated before weaving, or the fabric may be impregnated after weaving sufficientimpregnant being preferably used to provide a coating on the surfaces of the yarns with Consequent cementing at their intersections to prevent yarn slip. Suitable im-. pregnants are synthetic rubber latices, e.g. neoprene, butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, or polyvinyl resin latices, or solutions or emulsions of polyvinyl butyral, polyvinyl acetate, or ethyl cellulose. The adhesive for the abrasive may liquid ' A ' stage phenolic resins, oil modified phenolic resins, oleo resin varnishes, or urea-formaldehyde resins. The abrasive may be silicon carbide or alumina, and it is preferred to use irregular aggregates thereof, cemented by the same adhesive as that used to bond them to the fabric, to produce thick abrasive coatings, which reduce the fabric mesh openings by 15-40 per cent. The impregnated base fabric 11 is fed from roll 21, through adhesive tank 23 and squeeze rolls 29, past rotating brush 31, which breaks films of adhesive across the fabric meshes. Abrasive grains are fed evenly across the fabric from hopper 35 by roller 37 through adjustable gate 38. Grains pass through the fabric to bin 39, where mound 40 is maintained on which the web drags to ensure overall deposit of abrasive to the entire exposed surfaces of the yarns. The abrasive coated web passes unsupported through drying oven 51, and thence through sizing tank 53, containing the same adhesive as, tank 23, absorbent squeeze rolls 59 and drying oven 61, to effect curing of the adhesive,. to roll 63.
