Abstract
555,640. Abrasive coated webs. ABBEY, A. (Carborundum Co.). Jan 21, 1942, No. 898. [Class 60] A flexible abrasive web comprising a felted fibrous material impregnated with adhesive binder and having abrasive grain distributed throughout the impregnated fibres is formed by superposing a number of thin carded fibrous laps 5 ... 8 formed on carding rolls 2 on to which laps the abrasive grain is fed from hoppers 16 ... 18, the laps being assembled on an endless belt 11. Adhesive binder in powder form such as glue, resin, rubber or rubber-like material may be incorporated within the laps as by admixture with the abrasive grain. The assembled laps are then compacted by squeeze rolls 22, 23 and charged with liquid adhesive binder from a pan 30 by rolls 28, 29 and finally passed over a suction drum 40 to a drying chamber where the web is festooned over stacks 43 on a moving rack 44. Suitable fibrous materials include natural fibres such as cotton, wool, jute, flax and asbestos and various synthetic fibres such as glass wool, resinous and rubber-like fibrous substances.
