Abstract

Alkyl benzenes are chloromethylated to produce alkaryl chloromethyl compounds by reacting an alkyl benzene with sulphuric acid and a compound prepared by reacting (a) formaldehyde or compounds which engender formaldehyde; (b) an alcohol; and (c) a chlorine containing compound selected from phosphorus trichloride, phosphorus pentachloride, sulphurous oxychloride or acyl chlorides. Formaldehyde engendering compounds which may be used are paraformaldehyde, alcoholic solutions of formaldehyde and trioxane. Suitable alcohols are methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, n-butanol and ethylene glycol. Acetyl chloride may be used as the acyl chloride. The chloromethylating agent is prepared from formaldehyde and the chlorine containing compound in the presence of sulphuric acid at a temperature of - 20 DEG C. to 60 DEG C. The following chlormethylation step may be effected at - 10 DEG to 100 DEG C. Starting hydrocarbons mentioned are toluene, xylenes, cumene, ethyl benzene, propyl benzene, dodecylbenzene, dodecyltoluene and pentadecylbenzene. In addition there may be used halogen compounds, ethers, thioethers aldehydes, ketones, phenols, acids, esters and nitro compounds. Some of the alkaryl chloromethyl products obtained are reacted with triethylamine to form quaternary ammonium compounds. Specification 689,286 is referred to.
