Abstract

Flame-resistant thermo-plastic materials are prepared from tertiary phosphine oxides of formula:- <FORM:0865844/IV (a)/1> where X is hydrogen C1-4 alkyl or halogen and X1 is hydrogen or halogen. In an example the compound of the above formula in which X and X1 are hydrogen is reacted with toluene -2, 4-diisocyanate in chlorbenzene solution in the presence of triethylamine.ALSO:The invention comprises phosphine oxides of formula: <FORM:0865844/IV (b)/1> where X is hydrogen, C1-4 alkyl or halogen and X1 is hydrogen or halogen. They are prepared by reacting an aldehyde of formula: p <FORM:0865844/IV (b)/2> with phosphine in the presence of aqueous mineral acid with or without an inert organic solvent. Temperatures of 0 to 100 DEG C. are mentioned.
