Abstract

778,726. Switches held set and freed mechanically. HOOVER, Ltd. June 17, 1955 [July 5, 1954], No. 19668/54. Class 38(5) A switch having two " on " positions and an intermediate " off " postion comprises a hand lever 25 controlling a shaft 12 carrying six cams 20 arranged side-by-side (Fig. 2, not shown), each cam operating a contact blade 22. Two of the cams have two " flats," 21 whereby their contacts 22 close in both " on " positions of the lever, whereas two other cams have a single " flat arranged to close their contacts in one " on " position, the two remaining cams. closing their contacts in the other on " position. The contacts are enclosed in a watertight casing 10 having end wallsthrough which the shaft ends are sealed, the lever 25 being situated at one end of casing. At the other end of the casing the shaft carries a quadrant 27 co-operating. with lugs 37 of a member 32 attached to the ends of an arch-shaped push-button 31 straddling the shaft. A pivoted arm 33 biased by a spring 34 has a turned-over end engaging a hole in the member 32 to bias the button 31 outwardly. When the lever 25 is moved to either " on " position a lug 35 on the member 32 is moved into locking engagement with one of a pair of shoulders 36 formed on the quadrant 27 whereby the lever cannot return the shaft to the "off" position, Fig. 5. A blade spring 41 co-operates with ears 40 of a saddle 39 integral with the quadrant 27 so that when the button is pressed the lug 35 leaves the shoulder 36 and the spring 41 rotates the shaft to the "off" position. If the spring 41 fails to act the switch is positively moved " off " by the engagement of one of the lugs 37 with a radial face 38 of the quadrant or with an ear 40.
