A lid d of a desk a is attached by a pair of friction hinges each comprising a slotted sector b pivoted by a pin f between a pair of spacedapart plates h. The sector b is attached by a flap. c to the lid d and the plates b are secured by screws n to the desk. A friction washer j is placed between the sector b and each plate h, a bolt k or self-tapping screw passing through the plates h and washers and engaging the arcuate slot e in the sector b to adjust the friction on the sector b so that the lid d will remain open in any position within the limits of the slot e.
