A drafting machine for bast fibres has fallers and retaining and drawing rollers driven by gearing enclosed in the head of a pillar 2, the head being arranged to overhang part of one or more sliver cans 7, 11 located at the front and back of the machine. The fallers 6 may have a plurality of groups of pins, each group acting on a single sliver and the spaces between the groups being reduced to a minimum.
