Abstract

776,010. Hydrostatic gears. EBERT, H. Nov. 10, 1954 [Dec. 19, 1953], No. 32595/54. Class 69 (2). An hydrostatic gear, comprises a pump 1 driven by the engine of a vehicle, a motor 2 driving the road wheels, and a valve 7 which functions as a clutch and permits slip between the pump and motor until the gear can transmit the full engine torque. When the engine is idling, a centrifugal governor 12 driven at a speed proportional to the engine speed allows the delivery of a pump 11 to return to a sump 17 via pipes 19, 16, and the pressure in a space 9 at one end of the valve 7 is reduced. A piston 8 in the valve is moved by a spring 10 and connects the delivery line 5 of the pump to the return line 6. As the engine speed increases, the governor 12 moves a valve 12<SP>1</SP> and thereby reduces the flow back to the sump 17 and the pressure in the pipe 19 and in the space 9 increases. The piston 8 is thereby moved to compress the spring 10 and cut off the connection between the pipes 5, 6 and the motor 2 is driven. The pressure in the pipe 19 and in the space 9 is limited by a spring-loaded valve 13. With a further increase in engine speed, a governor 27 moves a valve 23 controlling the piston drum 20 of the motor via a piston 21. The valve 23 is also operated by the accelerator pedal 31. A reversing device 33 is provided between the pump 1 and the motor 2, and selectively connects the pressure pipe 5 or return pipe 6 to the inlet and return pipes 5<SP>1</SP>, 61 of the pump.
