772,943. Brake shoes. WESTINGHOUSE AIR BRAKE CO. Nov. 3, 1955 [Nov. 12, 1954], No. 31461/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 103 (1). In a moulded brake shoe assembly, a composition friction body is adapted for frictional engagement with a member to be braked and a composition backing-plate is attached to the body for reinforcement thereof. The composition backing plate comprises a thermosetting resin (such as phenolic-aldehydes, melamines, ureas and alkyds) and a fibrous or laminated reinforcing material embedded therein (such as cotton, wood, paper, asbestos, spun glass and metal wire). The composition friction body includes a high percentage of cast-iron chips, a certain percentage of thermosetting resin binder material unvulcanized rubber and asbestos filler materials. The composition backing- plate may be moulded simultaneously and together with the composition friction body using a thermosetting resin binder or may be formed separately and bonded together with a suitable cement or secured by rivets.
