Abstract
Flexible friction material is obtained by intimately mixing a basic mixture comprising fibrous material containing natural cork particles, a binding agent comprising oil-resistant synthetic rubber and a thermosetting resin, which mixture has been hardened, pressed and subsequently comminuted, with an additional mass of oil-resistant sythetic rubber in the proportions of between 70% and 90% by weight of the basic mixture to between 10% and 30% by weight of the additional oil-resistant synthetic rubber. The oil-resistant synthetic rubber in the basic mix is chloroprene latex and that forming the additional mass is preferably acrylonitrile rubber, the thermosetting resin is preferably a phenol-formaldehyde resin and the fibrous material is asbestos or a mixture of asbestos and cotton fibre. The mix may also contain conventional vulcanizing agents, e.g. sulphur, and friction material filler, e.g. zinc oxide and/or soot.
