Abstract
1,272,566. Frictional compositions. BP CHEMICALS (U.K ) Ltd. 29 Aug., 1969 [1 Oct., 1968], No. 46464/68. Heading C3R. A composition for making friction elements comprises a frictional material bonded with a phenolic resin mixed with 5-50% of anhydrous boric oxide. The frictional material may be asbestos fibres. The phenolic resin may be a novolak prepared from phenol and formalin in the presence of oxalic acid or a resole. It may be modified with a fatty acid, fatty oil or natural or synthetic rubber. The boric oxide may be mixed with the resin before adding it to the other components of the composition. In the case of a novolak, a curing agent, e.g. hexamine, may be present in the composition. In an example, the composition is moulded into a disc pad.
