A protector for a trawl board comprises a massive hard steel block base 9 which is small in length compared with the length of the board and is adapted to be secured beneath the lower edge of the board by one or more limbs 10 extending upwardly from the base to be secured against the surface of the board. The limbs 10 have holes 13 for securing bolts. The protector may be U-shaped as shown or J-shaped. A U- shaped protector may be built up from two J-shaped protectors. The upper surface of the base 9 is shaped to correspond closely to the part of the shoe of the board it abuts, thus a protector abutting the middle part of the shoe has a straight upper base surface and a protector abutting a curved end of the shoe has a longitudinally curved upper base surface. The bottom of the base is convex longitudinally and the sides of the base may bulge. The protector may be made of a manganese steel or of a heat treated high carbon steel; preferably the heat treatment is confined to the base; the limbs being left malleable. The Provisional Specification states that the upper surface of the base may be channelled to receive the shoe, the space between a pair of straps forming one limb may be filled by a hardened steel plate, the base may be channelled or rebated to receive the edges of side plates welded or screwed thereto, ribs may be formed on the base, the sides of the base may taper downwardly to a narrow running edge. It also describes a protector in which the base is built up from hard steel circular or ovoid plates which may abut face to face but are preferably spaced apart longitudinally. Each base plate is notched at the top to receive a pair of side plates which are welded thereto. The spaced base plates may be arranged transversely oblique to the side plates and hence to the trawl board.
