Abstract

771,477. Direct injection engines. KRUG, H. Nov. 2,1953 [Nov. 7, 1952], No. 30190/53. Addition to 749,825. Class 7 (3). In a modification of a fuel injection engine according to the parent Specification, in which the fuel is sprayed immediately on to the wall of a combustion chamber formed as a body of rotation in the piston and vaporised therefrom by the swirling air charge, the axis 24 of the combustion chamber 2 is either inclined to the cylinder axis 26, Fig. 1, or parallel thereto but offset therefrom, Fig. 2. The fuel injector 4 may be inclined or parallel to the cylinder axis and may have several injection orifices or a single orifice producing a hollow-cone jet. In Fig. 2 a tangential passage 27 guides the swirling air charge into the chamber immediately upstream of the fuel jet 8 and a similar passage 28 guides the burnt products out of the chamber. In a modification the passage 27 opens into a recess formed in the mouth of the combustion chamber.
