Abstract

771,351. Annealing brass. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Jan. 19, 1954 [Jan. 21, 1953], No. 1794/53. Class 72 [Also in Group XII] Brass articles are batch annealed in a container of which at least the interior is composed of material, such as mild steel, free from any oxides capable of being decomposed or reduced at the annealing temperature and which is contained in an outer container, or provided with an outer casing, of heatresistant material such as a steel, or nickel-chromium alloy, means being provided for maintaining a continuous flow of reducing gas such as hydrogen or cracked ammonia round the articles. As shown, an outer pot 3 of nickelchromium alloy is suspended in a furnace having a heating coil 2 in its wall 1 by a flange 4 on its cover 6, the flange providing a channel 10 for water-cooling of a rubber sealing ring 7. The container for the articles comprises two parts 11 and 12 of mild steel the upper of which, 11 is a sliding fit in the lower and has a pipe13 through which reducing gases are supplied, the gases leaving the pot 3 at 14. The bright annealing of coils of brass strip at 560‹C. for half-an-hour is described. Specification 620,282 is referred to.
