Abstract

770,704. Granulating apparatus. BEDFORD GRANULATING CO., Ltd. Oct. 21, 1955 [Jan. 11, 1955], No. 844/55. Class 59 [Also in Group V] A method of producing granular material or pellets comprises successively notching an edge of synthetic plastic or other sheet material by co-operating knives having notched edges and removing the projecting portions of material by an un-notched knife associated with one of the notched knives, the material being advanced so that the formed projecting portions thereof are successively severed. The machine shown comprises a rotary drum 5 having secured thereto a plurality of notched knives 29, each having associated therewith an unnotched knife 31, the knives 29 co-operating with a fixed notched knife 26. The material is fed over a table 15 and under a spring- loaded pressure roller 13 to the knives by means of knurled rollers 6, 7 driven from the shaft of the drum 5. The roller 6 is mounted in a spring-loaded pivoted frame 8 provided with a handle 10 for moving the roller 6 away from the roller 7 when required. The rollers 6, 7 may be heated. The granular material falls through a shoot 33. In other forms, a pair of rotary notched knives may be used, or a reciprocating notched knife or knives, or one or more notched knives movable in an orbital path.
