Abstract

1,195,163. Cutting tea. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. 19 Feb., 1969 [1 March, 1968], No. 10044/68. Heading A2B. [Also in Divisions A4 and B4] A knife for a cutting machine comprises a plate 10 having a bevelled cutting edge 12 and a plurality of grooves 11 formed in the non-bevelled edge thereby providing a crenellated cutting edge. The grooves 11 may be formed with square or undercut corners (15, Fig. 4). As applied to a machine for cutting tea leaves, the knife is clamped by a plate 24 on a pivoted arm which is actuated, via a connecting rod 25 and eccentric 26, by a fly wheel 27. The uncut tea leaves L are fed to a mouthpiece of the machine by means of a conveyer 20 and compressed by rollers 23. The knife edge co-operates with a drum 22 so that at each actuation the leaves are simultaneously cut in two directions in order to produce the separate tea leaves. In an alternative arrangement, four knives may be mounted on a rotatable drum (44, Fig. 9) the uncut leaves being fed to the cutting position by means of a pair of conveyer belts 34, 36 Fig. 8. The knives may be sharpened continuously as they rotate by means of a transversing grinding wheel (49). Alternatively, the knives may be brought, one at a time, to a fixed grinding position.
