Abstract

Polyhalogenonitro compounds of formula CFXYCRR1NO2 where R and R1 are fluorine, chlorine, bromine, or alkyl, fluoro-, perfluoro-, chloro- and bromo-alkyl, each having not more than 20 carbon atoms, or perfluorocycloalkyl having not more than 6 carbon atoms in the ring, X is fluorine, chlorine or bromine, and Y is chlorine or bromine, are prepared by reacting a nitrosyl halide of formula NOY, or a nitryl halide of formula NO2Y, with a halogenoolefin of formula RR1C=CFX; when using a nitryl halide, compounds where R and R1 are hydrogen may be obtained. In examples, nitrosyl chloride is reacted with (1) tetrafluoroethylene to obtain 1-chlorotetrafluoro-2-nitroethane; (2) with chlorotrifluoroethylene to obtain 1,2-dichloro-trifluoro-2-nitroethane; (3) with 1,1-dichlorodifluoroethylene to obtain 1,1,2 - trichloro - difluoro - 1 - nitroethane; (4) nitrosyl bromide is reacted with tetrafluoroethylene to obtain 1-bromotetrafluoro-2-nitroethane; (5) nitryl chloride is reacted with tetrafluoroethylene to obtain 1-chlorotetrafluoro-2-nitroethane.
