Abstract

Polymers having a repeating unit <FORM:0843795/IV(a)/1> where Z represents a monovalent radical, have elastomeric properties. Z is preferably fluorine, chlorine, a perfluoroalkyl group, or a partly fluorinated, or fluorinated and chlorinated, alkyl group. The polymers may be obtained by reacting trifluoroethylene with a perfluoronitrosomethane, preferably in equimolar proportions. Preferred process conditions are -40 DEG to 150 DEG C. and 0,1 to 200 atmospheres. Examples describe the copolymerization of trifluoroethylene and trifluoronitrosomethane in a sealed tube at (i) 20 DEG C. and 8 atmospheres and (ii) 70 DEG C. and 5 to 10 atmospheres.ALSO:Oxazetidines of the formula <FORM:0843795/IV(b)/1> are obtained by reacting trifluoroethylene with trifluoronitrosomethane at above 50 DEG C. and 5 to 10 atmospheres. One of the fluorine esters of the nitroso compound may be replaced by another monovalent radical e.g. chlorine or a fluoro-(and/or chloro-) alkyl group.
