Abstract

The decomposition of halogenated methanes is reduced by incorporating a nitro-compound having a dipole moment of more than 3 Debye units of formula RNO2, in which R may be phenyl or naphthyl free from active hydrogen atoms and which may be substituted in ortho-position by chlorine, bromine or NO2, CF3 or an ether oxygen bridge, or in which R is Me, Et or Pr. In examples, chloro-bromomethane is stabilized with nitrobenzene, nitromethane, o-chloronitrobenzene 2-nitroanisole, and 2-nitrophenetole and bromoform with nitromethane.
