Abstract

770,026. Helicopters. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. Oct. 2, 1953 [Oct. 10, 1952], No. 1884/56. Divided out of 770,025. Class 4. A device for steering and/or stabilizing a helicopter comprises a jet propulsion nozzle provided at the end of the tail combined with means for laterally and asymmetrically deflecting at least a part of the jet from its axial flow, said means comprising controllable means for intercepting a portion of the jet to initiate the deflection, and laterally extending jet guiding means for furthering the deflection. As shown, a turbine 21 and air compressor 22 supply compressed air for jets on the blade tips. The turbine exhaust is ducted to a nozzle 23, the end walls of which are curved at 26, 27. Pipes 30, 31 from the compressor lead through valves 32, 33 to a pipe symmetrically placed across the outlet of the nozzle and divided in two by a partition 29. The pipe has slots 34, 35, so that a jet of air can be blown across one half of the issuing jet in either direction, causing one half of the jet to adhere to wall 26 or 27.
