782,852. Jet propulsion nozzles. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. Feb. 3, 1955 [Feb. 11, 1954], No. 3230/55. Addition to 745,630. Class 110 (3). A rocket or jet propulsion unit having a jet propulsion nozzle as claimed in the parent Specification in which the area of the propulsion nozzle is varied by means of an annular auxiliary jet inclined upstream with respect to the flow through the nozzle, has the passage extending around the end of the nozzle supplied with motive gas tapped from the main stream in the nozzle in a part thereof upstream of the end of the nozzle or in a part of the unit in direct communication with the nozzle. In the arrangement shown, gas from the main jet flow enters an annular conduit formed between the surface ABC of an annular body mounted in the propulsion nozzle and the propulsion nozzle casing. This gas is expanded in the nozzle CF. The annular body is attached by arms 1 to pistons 3, 31 mounted in a cylinder 6. Springs 8, 81 maintain the pistons 3, 3<SP>1</SP> in the mean position. When it is desired to vary the effective area of the propelling nozzle, compressed air is supplied through one of the conduits 7a, 7<SP>1</SP>a and the annular body is thereby moved to increase or decrease the width of the nozzle CF. In a modification applied to a rocket, an annular conduit, arranged around the end of the nozzle, communicates with the main flow through an annular slot. This conduit is supplied with fluid from the combustion chamber of the rocket through a by-pass pipe provided with a butterfly control valve. This valve may be automatically controlled by speed or altitude or by a clockwork movement.
