Abstract
769,824. Springs; road-vehicie spring suspensions. PEMBERTON, L. C. May 31, 1955 No. 15639/55. Classes 108(2) and 108(3). A spring suspension unit comprises a pair of relatively movable members 7, 12, between which is interposed a coil spring 11, an inflatable container 22 having inflation means 27, the container 22 when inflated, having parts of its side walls expanded radially to protrude a substantial distance between convolutions of the spring in all conditions of loading. In Fig. 1, as shown, applied to a swinging link type independent front suspension, the spring 11 is disposed between a chassis-frame bracket 6, and a cup 12 carried by the swinging link (not shown). The cup 12 is apertured at 14 to receive a disc 16 of moulded fibre or rubber, upon which rests the base of the container 22. The upper end of the container 22 bears on a similar disc 15 disposed in an apertured flanged bracket 10 rigid with the bracket 6. The spring suspension unit may be employed as an auxiliary unit, Fig. 3, (not shown) being disposed between an intermediate point in a leaf spring, and the chassisframe. The invention is also described as applied to a suspension in which an axle is carried by rearwardly trailing arms, Fig. 5 (not shown). The unit may be inflated to a degree which adjusts the height of a vehicle to compensate for the set of main suspension springs, or to compensate for the increase in load due to the attachment of the vehicle to a trailer.
