Abstract

768,145. Making bags. DICKINSON & CO., Ltd., J. July 12, 1955 [May 5, 1954], No. 13059/54. Class 94(2). A machine-made bag produced from a blank folded transversely to provide the two bag side walls and passed through the machine with the fold trailing, has the bottom tucked in to form a gusset. The blank is opened out adjacent the fold to produce a perpendicular area extending between the walls and this area is tucked in between the walls at the fold, the walls then being closed down on the tuck. The tucking apparatus described comprises suction members 14, 15 which pull apart the walls of the blank 11 enabling a blade 16 to engage the fold and form the tuck. The blank, positioned by a stop 10 drying tucking, is forwarded by rolls 12, 13 to ironing rolls 19, 20. The bag side seams may have been sealed and the blank creased at the outer bottom folds prior to tucking. The apparatus may be incorporated in a machine for producing the carrier bag shown. The side edges 26, 27 of one wall are folded onto and glued to the other wall, the side edges of which have been folded over and secured to thisother wall as at 32, 33, and the leading free edges of the blank are turned over inwards to enclose reinforcing strips 21, 22 and form a closure flap and doubled mouth. The strip 22 and a further strip 23 secured to the opposite wall have finger apertures 24, 25. The operations other than tucking are stated to be carried out by known means which is not described.
